How Do You Say “How Are You” in Mandarin Chinese And Reply – “I Am Fine, Thank You”…
So if you remember, the first Chinese phrase that I put on my blog here was 你好 – the Mandarin way of saying Hi or Hello to people you meet on the street in your daily living situations in Chinese speaking environment. If you do not know it, please go and click on the link above and learn that first. All the other things I have learned are based ib this first word combination.
As soon as you know to say Hello in Mandarin, come back here and learn with me all the words on this page, where I show you how my week 1 progressed from two simple words into around 16 basic words that can help you also to remember certain grammar patterns.
As soon as you master these simple sentences, you can just remove the words I teach you here and exchange it for new vocabulary that is more relevant to you. If you are confused now about this, do not worry I will show you plenty of examples how I go about it.
Mandarin Chinese Lesson
By now you should know word 你 (Nǐ – you) and 好 (Hǎo – good), when said together its just saying You Good, which in Chinese means Hi or Hello.
Now, by adding the particle 吗 （Ma） at the end, you will create question.
Therefore by saying:
你好吗？ – Nǐ hǎo ma? = How are you?
Now you know how to create simple question in Mandarin Chinese language. The good start, don’t you think?
And now, let’s learn the common answer on this question, so either you or the other person can answer. Depending who said the above question first.
To create answer, that will simply mean — I am good, thank you we need these words:
我 – Wǒ – which means – I
很 – Hěn – which means – very
To those two new words in Mandarin Chinese you only add the one you learn before from saying Hi and it is the word — 好 — you should know what it means by now. To make the whole sentence you simply say:
我很好 – Wǒ hěn hǎo – I am very good
Now when you say only this, there will be no other conversation. So if you want to continue the talk, you simple add 你呢 – Nǐ ne – what about you —- at the end. That would make the other person you are talking to to respond. It should look like this now:
我很好， 你呢？ – Wǒ hěn hǎo, nǐ ne? – I’m fine. How about you?
And most likely, the other person would respond with similar sentence, but will add one extra word in front of the verb. This word is 也 – Yě – and means – also. So when the person answers your question like this it will be:
我也很好 – Wǒ yě hěn hǎo – I am also fine
And because Chinese are polite, they would always add word Thank You at the end and you should do the same. So the word for thank you is — 谢谢 – Xièxiè。
Let’s put it together like this:
我也很好， 谢谢！- Wǒ yě hěn hǎo, xièxiè! – I am also fine, thank you!
Fantastic! 非常昊 – Fēicháng hǎo！ Now you can make simple sentence in Chinese and you can also create a simple question. That is great start! Keep up the great work and soon you will see that learning Mandarin Chinese is very easy.
Also, if you get this simple way of saying it, I have also created a more expanded version, where you will learn the top 7 ways of saying how you doing in Chinese and also many answers that you can use.
